Create free static and dynamic QR codes online for URLs, text, Wi-Fi, contact cards, email, SMS and phone numbers. Here's how QR codes work and how to get the most out of them.
What is a QR code?
A QR (Quick Response) code is a two-dimensional barcode that stores information — a link, text, Wi-Fi credentials or contact details — in a pattern of black and white modules. Any phone camera can scan it instantly: menus, posters, packaging, business cards, tickets.
Static vs dynamic QR codes
A static QR code stores your content directly in the image — it never expires and works with no server, but can't be changed after generation. A dynamic QR code points to a short redirect link, so you can edit the destination, pause it and see scan counts while the printed pattern stays the same.
Do QR codes expire?
Static QR codes don't have an expiration date — the data lives inside the image itself; the destination just has to stay online. Dynamic QR codes keep working as long as the redirect service is available. Oceanmonks never deletes active links automatically.
Can a QR code be edited?
Not a static one — its content is baked into the pattern, so you'd generate a fresh code instead. Dynamic codes are editable: change the destination anytime from My codes without touching the printed image. That's why signs, menus and packaging should use dynamic codes.
PNG vs SVG downloads
PNG is a pixel image — perfect for websites, social posts and presentations at a fixed size. SVG is vector art that scales to any size without blur — the right choice for print, posters, vehicle wraps and engraving. Oceanmonks gives you both, free.
What is error correction?
QR codes stay readable even when partially damaged. Error correction — L 7%, M 15%, Q 25%, H 30% — sets how much damage they survive; higher levels also let you place a logo over the code. For anything printed or handled roughly, use High (30%), the Oceanmonks default.
How to create a QR code
- Enter your URL, text or Wi-Fi / contact details.
- Customize size, colors and error correction.
- Generate your QR code — it renders live.
- Download it as PNG or SVG.
- Test with a phone before printing.
QR code use cases
Restaurant menus that never go out of date, guest Wi-Fi that joins in one scan, digital business cards, packaging links, event tickets, WhatsApp and SMS prompts, app download pages, payment links — one scan replaces typing.
